This is the first book in the series that inspired George RR's Song of Ice and Fire。 Its very easy to spot where the influences sprang from。 The Iron King is very well written but fans of GRR will be hugely disappointed。 Its nowhere on that scale but a lot more realistic and believable。 Its after all mostly true story。 A good read， but GRR spoils it for us。 This is the first book in the series that inspired George RR's Song of Ice and Fire。 Its very easy to spot where the influences sprang from。 The Iron King is very well written but fans of GRR will be hugely disappointed。 Its nowhere on that scale but a lot more realistic and believable。 Its after all mostly true story。 A good read， but GRR spoils it for us。 。。。more

I found this book very good and it gave me further insight into the link between the English royal family and the French royal family of the time through Isabella's marriage to Edward the second。I quite often like to read up on characters I find within historical fiction novels。 Interestingly enough， here I found that Wikipedia and Britannica state Nogaret died in 1313 but events within this book have him still playing a prominent role in 1314。 In searching to clear up this discrepancy I have fo I found this book very good and it gave me further insight into the link between the English royal family and the French royal family of the time through Isabella's marriage to Edward the second。I quite often like to read up on characters I find within historical fiction novels。 Interestingly enough， here I found that Wikipedia and Britannica state Nogaret died in 1313 but events within this book have him still playing a prominent role in 1314。 In searching to clear up this discrepancy I have found that the Catholic encyclopedia have Nogaret's death in 1314 but I can't seem to find any other sources that back this up。 。。。more

Could t get into it。 Had to abandon it at 30%。 Just didn’t progress beyond lord of exposition。 Felt like an attempt at historical fiction in terms of maturity of writing。 Maybe it’s better in French but it doesn’t work in English。 Too much tell， not much show， non-engaging characters。 Very disappointed。

Coming from Game of Thrones， this book was pretty dull to read。 The writing style is dated， and plot develops like a mediocre drama。 I can appreciate that it’s based off real events， but it was overall disappointing。
